John Piper, well known for his use of hand gestures and Neo-Reformed theology, recently discussed why God was validated in the slaughter of the Canaanite people described in the Old Testament. Piper does not have the best track record in regards to his interpretation of that eternal question: “Why do bad things happen to good people.” Just this last year he stated that God was using devastating tornadoes in the Midwest to send a message to the culture at large: that God was angry with us (you read that right). I’m sure Piper is personally a great guy, but his use of biblical literalism does not do justice to the Hebrew texts or to God’s action in the world. I fear it will further damage the world’s already poor perception of Jesus’ followers. Click on the link in the title above to read more by scholar Pete Enns.
